Map Making
All maps have been made using the open source program Quantum GIS. I have been using it for several years and am amazed at how quickly it has progressed. Everything that I have created - color-keyed elevation, hillshading, Paul's travels, place names - have all been done using this program. I am simply amazed at the vast array of tutorials, YouTube videos and "how to's" available. I'm also amazed at the robust user community that has created hundreds of plugins to expand QGIS' capabilities.
I have also been careful to use open license fonts in the creation of these maps. I have used the Ubuntu font set throughout. This font is freely available for download and use.
The United States Geological Survey had a great interface for all sorts of GIS datasets. They provide access to the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) from 2000. Using files from this site, I was able to create not only elevation and hillshading, but contour lines as well.
A special shout out to OpenBible.info for getting me started by providing the initial GIS placenames data.Â
Another shout out to Kaelin Jewell for providing an easy reference for GIS information for the Roman Empire at the time of Christ. By adding the Roman road system to Asia Minor, I was able to create a map that demonstrates that the order of the churches in Revelation is determined by the quickest route to deliver the letter by the roads existing at the time.
